HISTORY OF TEETH WHITENING

There is nothing new in the use of teeth whitening products, although they have, of course, substantially changed throughout the centuries

There were toothbrushes still 5000 years ago. Back in those times they certainly did not resemble too much the contemporary representatives of their family. In fact, people were chewing sticks to clean their teeth. This is something that people are doing even today in some secluded and not so advanced communities, remaining aside of the modern civilization.

Sometime in the 16th century, the first bristle toothbrushes appeared in China. They were made of wood or bone and pig bristles. Then the traders brought this "fashion" to Europe, but still only the richer people were those taking care of their teeth's hygiene and for many and many years it was most common for people to use toothpicks rather than brushes.

Actual teeth whitening came with the use of the first toothpaste by the ancient Egyptians 4000 years ago. To clean their teeth, they were using a mixture of powdered pumice stone and wine vinegar, while their Roman contemporaries were using urine to this end! In fact, ammonia and other similar chemical substances are still used as active ingredients in teeth whitening products today.

If in the 17th century one wanted to have their teeth whitened, they were visiting the barbers shop. Barbers often were practicing as dentists in those days. They were first filing the teeth with a metal file and were treating them with an acid which had actually whitening effect, but was also causing severe tooth decay!

People discovered fluoride as a mean of keeping teeth healthy in the 19th century. It was also found out that fluoride reduced the risk of cavities, but it could lead to staining of the teeth, especially when significant amounts of it are administered.
